The Henry Morgenthau Preserve

The Henry Morgenthau Preserve became part of the Bedford Audubon Society on February 11, 2009. The preserve is managed by the Henry Morgenthau Preserve Committee whose mission is the management, protection and maintenance of the Henry Morgenthau Preserve. The committee is comprised of local conservationists and concerned citizens.

Founded in 1972, the preserve is a gift presented to Pound Ridge and surrounding communities, by Ruth Morgenthau Knight and her daughter, Ellin N. London. The preserve honors Mrs. Knight’s father, Henry Morgenthau, a businessman and former US ambassador to Turkey, from 1913-16, a time of great difficulty for the Armenian citizens of Turkey, for whom Morgenthau was a strong advocate.

The preserve is set along the shoreline of Blue Heron Lake and includes within its boundaries a portion of the lake, a small offshore island, a number of wetland areas, a small pond, vernal pools and several small streams. Mrs. Knight donated the original twenty acres in 1972. An additional 12 acres were purchased from Dr. Polly Raizen in 1973 and an adjacent 4-acre parcel was donated by Mr. Sid Thompson in 1994.  (click for map directions)
